Back injuries come from many causes, and people of all ages, wealth and occupations can and do suffer from them.

Unfortunately, back injuries received during a car crash tend to be on the more severe side. They can have life-altering impacts.

Chronic pain and mental health issues

As the International Association for the Study of Pain says, back pain can and does have major lasting impacts on the body. Unfortunately, these impacts can also have very real impacts on mood, behavior, emotional stability and more.

Chronic pain is one of the big risks of any back injury, especially severe ones. Chronic pain is an umbrella term that simply refers to any pain which lasts over a certain period of time, to varying degrees of intensity.

Studies done over the years have proven a relationship between chronic pain and mental health issues such as depression or anxiety. Sufferers of chronic pain also have a higher rate than non-sufferers of developing issues with trauma or stressor based disorders.

Job loss and financial damage

Back injuries also have a high rate of leaving lasting damage behind, with many sufferers taking months or even years to fully rehabilitate. Some people never regain their previous range of motion or physical capabilities, putting them at risk for job loss if their job was physically demanding.

Of course, this puts even more financial pressure on a person in addition to the pressure they would have already felt from medical costs. All in all, a back injury can truly affect every single area of a person’s life and turn it upside down.
