Distracted driving happens in many different ways. The three main categories, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are manual distractions, visual distractions and cognitive distractions.
Drivers are often interested in ways to avoid these distractions. Since many of them come from cellphones, keeping your cellphone in your pocket or turning it off entirely can certainly help. But there are also things that come up during the drive, which may be entirely unrelated to a mobile device. It is important for drivers to understand that there are many different types of distraction, and preparation is usually the key to avoiding them.
Adjusting the vehicle
For instance, drivers sometimes want to adjust the seat, the steering wheel, the side mirrors, the radio station and other such settings. They may want to program a destination into their GPS.
While all of this is necessary to operate the car safely and effectively, it can all be done in advance. The car should be fully set up before the driver pulls out of their driveway to begin with.
Dealing with children
For parents, their own children could become one of the main distractions that they face. Children often want snacks, drinks, toys and other forms of entertainment.
Once again, working with the children in advance to make sure they have everything they need keeps the driver from trying to hand items to them in the backseat. This allows that adult driver to focus on the road until they arrive at their destination.
Have you been injured in an accident?
Even if you avoid distracted driving, you could certainly be injured by another driver who causes a serious crash. If so, you may deserve compensation for medical bills and other damages.
